A question that often comes up during my discussions with my clients, at the beginning of each project: what is the best solution to use for the creation of my website?

Today the web is full of various solutions, each of them with its advantages and disadvantages.

For a showcase or an e-commerce website, depending on the client’s budget and final goal, my approach is always to choose the platform that is the easiest to use, the most used on the web and that has a large community of users.

This is why I often recommend WordPress.

1. What is WordPress?

WordPress is an open-source CMS created in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. In the beginning, WordPress was a blogging platform but over time it has evolved into a true CMS (Content Management System) with thousands of plugins and themes in its catalog.

According to statistics to date, WordPress is used by more than 43% of websites on the web today.

2. Why choose WordPress?

There are different platforms that exist on the market to create a website such as Joomla, Wix, Weebly, Squarespace, etc…

As mentioned above, each of these platforms has advantages and disadvantages. But the purpose of my article is to help you better understand why choose WordPress.

2.1 WordPress is free, but…

Yes, WordPress is free and open-source. However, there are two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

2.1.1 WordPress.com

WordPress.com is the online version of WordPress like Blogger and Tumblr. It is a platform that allows you to create a site and administer it for free, BUT! By choosing WordPress.com you will have :

Advertising that will be broadcast in spite of you.

You will not be allowed to monetize your site with ads (AdSence for example)

You are limited on the number of themes and plugins to install.

You will find more details of the offers and prices of the different plans proposed by the online platform on WordPress.com.

2.1.2 WordPress.org

WordPress.org is a downloadable, self-hosted version. This allows you to have full control over your website. You can install themes and plugins at will (although this is not recommended). It is even possible to develop your own theme and plugin if you know HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.

Thanks to its flexibility and its system of modules, it is even possible to create an online store (e-commerce) with the WooCommerce plugin, which I will talk about in another dedicated article to come. You can also create a whole social network, thanks to plugins like Buddyboss.

WordPress and security

In the computer world in general, it is known that the more a solution is used, the more it is coveted by hackers.

WordPress does not stand out from the crowd! The CMS is well targeted by hackers. But fortunately, the platform is very secure. It is regularly updated it’s developers are quite reactive when a security issue raises.

Websites running on WordPress are sometimes hacked because of the lack of maintenance. Indeed, it is always necessary to update WordPress and the various plugins and themes installed.

4. Conclusion

WordPress is a powerful platform to create a website and have an online presence. It is possible to create a website of any type with the CMS and improve its design with downloadable themes but also its functionality thanks to thousands of plugins, free or paid.

For a complete website that meets your needs, it is sometimes better to go through a WordPress professional.

Why should I hire a WordPress developer for my website?

With a little computer knowledge, it is easy to create a website with WordPress. Host it and put it online.

But for a company that wants to get a professional website, with specific functionalities and with a very good design, it is important to go through a developer/web designer, who is specialized in WordPress.

For example, a WordPress developer can help you choose the right theme and plugins that will meet your specific needs. And make sure that everything is working as it should without any issues.

Add to that the fact that you need to be familiar with the platform in order to solve any problems that may arise during the development of the website.
